Pinhole Dreams is a collection of works by artists who use pinhole photography to challenge preconceptions of “ordinary life” and to help us us to see the world in a new light.

While some of the photographs in this exhibition take on surreal qualities through the use of image layering, others take advantage of the camera’s extraordinary depth of field and wide angles to record people and places in ways that are unusual or uncommon. Other artists use long exposures (days to weeks long) to create other-worldly images that track the progression of the sun in the sky while erasing the appearance day to day trivia like people and cars.

If you like photography, Pinhole Dreams is a show that you will enjoy.

Artist’s Statement

My abstract drawings and paintings are the visual record of exploration, criticism, trial and error, and discovery. The process is both determined and spontaneous; it includes critical reworking and accident as I look for something I haven’t seen before. There is little pre-planning so the characteristics of the media are in large part responsible for the look of each piece. Composing an arresting image with line, shapes and colors is my primary goal. In the process, thoughts and feelings may become associated with the forms thus influencing the direction and outcome of the work.

“In any kind of creative work a point is reached where our power of free choice comes to an end. The work assumes a life of its own, which offers its creator only the alternative of accepting or rejecting it. A mysterious ‘presence’ reveals itself, which gives the work a living personality of its own.”

Anton Ehrenzweig

The Bridgette Mayer Gallery will present its second solo exhibition by artist and Pew Fellow, Charles Burwell. “Structuring Desire / Desiring Structure”will be on view from November 2 – December 17, 2010, with an opening reception First Friday, November 5, from 6:00 – 8:30 pm. The exhibition will feature approximately nine new paintings. Also on view in the Vault Room will be “Kissing Walls”, a salon-style installation by artist Clint Takeda, featuring small drawings, prints and paintings on paper and wood.

Built from complex systems of layering that rely on the overlap of solid and patterned shapes with a specific structure of carefully dripped lines, Charles Burwell’s compositions are immensely time- and labor-intensive. His work explores the relationship between geometric structure and the organic flow of nature by combining forms derived from biology, archeology and natural history with other graphic, computer-generated elements. The artist states: “I see my work as a continual evolution from work done twenty years ago when biology, science and the natural world were major influences to the present where the desire to integrate the organic or nature with the mechanical is important. The use of the computer is part of that evolutionary process.”

Charles Burwell received his BFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art (Philadelphia, PA) in 1977, and his MFA from Yale University School of Art (New Haven, CT) in 1979. He has participated in many exhibitions, including solo shows at Bridgette Mayer Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (Wilmington, DE), Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH), the University of Delaware (Newark, DE), and Swarthmore College (Swarthmore, PA). He has taught at Tyler School of Art, Rhode Island School of Design (Providence, RI), and Dartmouth College. Burwell’s work is included in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia, PA), the Delaware Art Museum (Wilmington, DE), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Philadelphia, PA), and The Studio Museum in Harlem (New York, NY). He has been the recipient of two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships, a United States Information Agency grant for Middle East travel, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, and a Pew Fellowship in the Arts.

Space 1026 is proud to present new works by Sandy Kim and Logan White. With cameras constantly on hand, both young photographers document their daily lives through the increasingly archaic medium of 35 millimeter film. Showing together in Philadelphia for the first time, we welcome you to join us for an opening reception on Friday, October 1st from 7 – 10 pm, featuring the record selections of DJ Maggie Lee and a special live musical performance by Tough Knuckles.

Sandy Kim utilizes a highly self-referential style of photography which peers into the tiny microcosm of one woman’s life. Reminiscent of the casual documentary style popularized by Nan Goldin in the ’80s, the photographs in Sandy Kim highlight her life at one particular moment and the people who are revolving in and around it. Her work was recently collected in a new, self-titled monograph published by Unpiano Books.
More about Sandy Kim

Logan White is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work has been published in Vice Magazine, NYLON Magazine, NYLONguys, Blackpool Magazine, New American Paintings, Macon Magazine and Photographers Forum.
More about Logan White

Space 1026 was founded over a decade ago by a handful of artists and tricksters who organize rowdy public events and outrageous installations at their building and at other institutions. At the heart of Space 1026 is a communal screen-printing workshop and gallery space for monthly exhibitions by local and international artists.

There will be a reception for the artist on Friday, September 10th, from 5:30 to 7:30pm. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog with an essay by Richard Torchia, artist and Director of the Arcadia University Art Gallery, Glenside, PA.

Retrospection is an extended meditation on the relationship between an image and its subject, and a pictorial conversation engaging ideas of perception and presentation. The large, digitally constructed photographic print, The Key of Dreams is centrally positioned in the exhibition and represents a grouping of several of the individual works installed throughout the gallery. Its fixed composition works in apposition to the others, setting in motion a range of varying, provisional installation choices, and introducing notions of doubling, visual quoting, and cross-referencing.

Within this layered framework, Neff revisits her ongoing investigations in both the landscape and interior settings (including their conflated hybrids), and a proposed new stage for display considerations within the gallery context. Retrospection is an expanded re-enactment of a 2008 installation at Bruce Silverstein/20 in New York City.

This is Eileen Neff’s fourth solo exhibition at Locks Gallery. In 2007, Neff was featured in a solo exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia which traveled to the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, Ireland. In 2009 she was featured in a solo exhibition at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greenboro, NC. Neff’s work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions at institutions including P.S.1 and Artist Space in New York. Her work is included in public and private collections such as the Pew Charitable Trusts, The Dietrich Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
